BAPTISM OF THE LORD
BACK TO JESUS INDEX
John the Baptist, had been baptizing in the River Jordan, John the Baptiist was a cousin of Jesus' and Elizabeth's (Mary's Cousin) son. He spent many years proclaiming the coming of the Messiah.
Jesus came one day from Nazareth in Galilee and asked John to baptize him. John protested saying that it should be Jesus who baptizes him. But Jesus told him that they needed to do this to fulfill the prophets message.
Immediately after he was baptized he was praying and the heavens were opened and a dove came down and rested on Jesus. Suddenly there was a voice from heaven. "You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" John knew then that Jesus was the Messiah.
