Celebration of the Lord's Passion

First Reading: Isaiah 52:13--53:12
13Behold, My (AB)servant will prosper,
         He will be high and lifted up and greatly (AC)exalted.
    14Just as many were astonished at you, My people,
         So His (AD)appearance was marred more than any man
         And His form more than the sons of men.
    15Thus He will (AE)sprinkle many nations,
         Kings will (AF)shut their mouths on account of Him;
         For (AG)what had not been told them they will see,
         And what they had not heard they will understand.
1(A)Who has believed our message?
         And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
    2For He grew up before Him like a (B)tender shoot,
         And like a root out of parched ground;
         He has (C)no stately form or majesty
         That we should look upon Him,
         Nor appearance that we should [a]be attracted to Him.
    3He was (D)despised and forsaken of men,
         A man of sorrows and (E)acquainted with grief;
         And like one from whom men hide their face
         He was (F)despised, and we did not (G)esteem Him.
    4Surely our [b]griefs He Himself (H)bore,
         And our sorrows He carried;
         Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
         Smitten of (I)God, and afflicted.
    5But He was [c]pierced through for (J)our transgressions,
         He was crushed for (K)our iniquities;
         The (L)chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
         And by (M)His scourging we are healed.
    6All of us like sheep have gone astray,
         Each of us has turned to his own way;
         But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all
         To fall on Him.
    7He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
         Yet He did not (N)open His mouth;
         (O)Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
         And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
         So He did not open His mouth.
    8By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
         And as for His generation, who considered
         That He was cut off out of the land of the living
         (P)For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
    9His grave was assigned with wicked men,
         Yet He was with a (Q)rich man in His death,
         (R)Because He had (S)done no violence,
         Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
    10But the LORD was pleased
         To (T)crush Him, (U)putting Him to grief;
         If He would render Himself as a guilt (V)offering,
         He will see (W)His offspring,
         He will prolong His days,
         And the good (X)pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.
    11As a result of the anguish of His soul,
         He will (Y)see it and be satisfied;
         By His (Z)knowledge the Righteous One,
         My Servant, will justify the many,
         As He will (AA)bear their iniquities.
    12Therefore, I will allot Him a (AB)portion with the great,
         And He will divide the booty with the strong;
         Because He poured out (AC)Himself to death,
         And was (AD)numbered with the transgressors;
         Yet He Himself (AE)bore the sin of many,
         And interceded for the transgressors.

Second Reading: Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:7-9
14Therefore, since we have a great (Z)high priest who has (AA)passed through the heavens, Jesus (AB)the Son of God, let us hold fast our (AC)confession.
15For we do not have (AD)a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been (AE)tempted in all things as we are, yet (AF)without sin.
16Therefore let us (AG)draw near with (AH)confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
7In the days of His flesh, (S)He offered up both prayers and supplications with (T)loud crying and tears to the One (U)able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His (V)piety.
8Although He was (W)a Son, He learned (X)obedience from the things which He suffered.
9And having been made (Y)perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,

Gospel: John 18:1--19:42
1When Jesus had spoken these words, (A)He went forth with His disciples over (B)the ravine of the Kidron, where there was (C)a garden, in which He entered with His disciples.
2Now Judas also, who was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had (D)often met there with His disciples.
3(E)Judas then, having received (F)the Roman cohort and (G)officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and (H)torches and weapons.
4So Jesus, (I)knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, "(J)Whom do you seek?"
5They answered Him, "Jesus the Nazarene." He said to them, "I am He." And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them.
6So when He said to them, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground.
7Therefore He again asked them, "(K)Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus the Nazarene."
8Jesus answered, "I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,"
9to fulfill the word which He spoke, "(L)Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one."
10Simon Peter then, (M)having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave's name was Malchus.
11So Jesus said to Peter, "Put the sword into the sheath; (N)the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?"
Jesus before the Priests
12(O)So (P)the Roman cohort and the commander and the (Q)officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him,
13and led Him to (R)Annas first; for he was father-in-law of (S)Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that (T)it was expedient for one man to die on behalf of the people.
15(U)Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into (V)the court of the high priest,
16(W)but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.
17(X)Then the slave-girl who kept the door said to Peter, "(Y)You are not also one of this man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not."
18Now the slaves and the (Z)officers were standing there, having made (AA)a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were (AB)warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.
19(AC)The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching.
20Jesus answered him, "I (AD)have spoken openly to the world; I always (AE)taught in synagogues and (AF)in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret.
21"Why do you question Me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; they know what I said."
22When He had said this, one of the (AG)officers standing nearby (AH)struck Jesus, saying, "Is that the way You answer the high priest?"
23(AI)Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?"
24(AJ)So Annas sent Him bound to (AK)Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter's Denial of Jesus
25(AL)Now (AM)Simon Peter was standing and warming himself So they said to him, "(AN)You are not also one of His disciples, are you?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."
26One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one (AO)whose ear Peter cut off, said, "Did I not see you in (AP)the garden with Him?"
27Peter then denied it again, and immediately (AQ)a rooster crowed.
Jesus before Pilate
28(AR)Then they led Jesus from (AS)Caiaphas into (AT)the [a]Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into (AU)the Praetorium so that (AV)they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
29(AW)Therefore Pilate went out to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this Man?"
30They answered and said to him, "If this Man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you."
31So Pilate said to them, "Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law." The Jews said to him, "We are not permitted to put anyone to death,"
32to fulfill (AX)the word of Jesus which He spoke, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.
33Therefore Pilate (AY)entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, "(AZ)Are You the King of the Jews?"
34Jesus answered, "Are you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?"
35Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what have You done?"
36Jesus answered, "(BA)My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not [b]of this realm."
37Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "(BB)You say correctly that I am a king For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, (BC)to testify to the truth (BD)Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."
38Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he (BE)went out again to the Jews and said to them, "(BF)I find no guilt in Him.
39"(BG)But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release for you the King of the Jews?"
40So they cried out again, saying, "(BH)Not this Man, but Barabbas." Now Barabbas was a robber.
1  Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged.
2 And the soldiers wove a crown out of thorns and placed it on his head, and clothed him in a purple cloak,
3 and they came to him and said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they struck him repeatedly.
4 Once more Pilate went out and said to them, "Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no guilt in him."
5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak. And he said to them, "Behold, the man!"
6 When the chief priests and the guards saw him they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him. I find no guilt in him."
7 20 The Jews answered, "We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God."
8 Now when Pilate heard this statement, he became even more afraid,
9 and went back into the praetorium and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" Jesus did not answer him.
10 So Pilate said to him, "Do you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you and I have power to crucify you?"
11 Jesus answered (him), "You would have no power over me if it had not been given to you from above. For this reason the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin."
12 Consequently, Pilate tried to release him; but the Jews cried out, "If you release him, you are not a Friend of Caesar. 21 Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar."
13 When Pilate heard these words he brought Jesus out and seated him 22 on the judge's bench in the place called Stone Pavement, in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 It was preparation day for Passover, and it was about noon. 23 And he said to the Jews, "Behold, your king!"
15 They cried out, "Take him away, take him away! Crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your king?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."
16 Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. 24 So they took Jesus,
17 and carrying the cross himself 25 he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha.
18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.
19 26 Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, "Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews."
20 Now many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that he said, 'I am the King of the Jews.'"
22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."
23 27 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four shares, a share for each soldier. They also took his tunic, but the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top down.
24 So they said to one another, "Let's not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it will be," in order that the passage of scripture might be fulfilled (that says): "They divided my garments among them, and for my vesture they cast lots." This is what the soldiers did.
25 28 Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.
26 When Jesus saw his mother 29 and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son."
27 Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
28 After this, aware that everything was now finished, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, 30 Jesus said, "I thirst."
29 There was a vessel filled with common wine. 31 So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop and put it up to his mouth.
30 When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, "It is finished." And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.
31 Now since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and they be taken down.
32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus.
33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs,
34 33 but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out.
35 An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true; he knows 34 that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may (come to) believe.
36 For this happened so that the scripture passage might be fulfilled: "Not a bone of it will be broken."
37 And again another passage says: "They will look upon him whom they have pierced."
38 35 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, secretly a disciple of Jesus for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. And Pilate permitted it. So he came and took his body.
39 Nicodemus, the one who had first come to him at night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about one hundred pounds.
40 They took the body of Jesus and bound it with burial cloths along with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom.
41 Now in the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried.
42 So they laid Jesus there because of the Jewish preparation day; for the tomb was close by.
