2nd Reading:  2nd Corinthians  5:20-6:2

20Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
2 Corinthians 6
Their Ministry Commended
1And working together with Him,we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain--
2for He says, "AT THE ACCEPTABLE TIME I LISTENED TO YOU, AND ON THE DAY OF SALVATION I HELPED YOU."  Behold, now is "THE ACCEPTABLE TIME," behold, now is "THE DAY OF SALVATION"--

Gospel: Matthew 6:1-6,16-18

Giving to the Poor and Prayer
1"Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.  2"So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
3"But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,  4so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.  5"When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
6"But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. Fasting; The True Treasure; Wealth (Mammon)  16" Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
17"But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face
18so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

Thursdays after Ash Wednesday

Reading: Deuteronomy 30:15-20

Choose Life
15"See,I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity;
16in that I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply, and that the LORD your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it.
17"But if your heart turns away and you will not obey, but are drawn away and worship other gods and serve them,  18I declare to you today that you shall surely perish. You will not prolong your days in the land where you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess it.
19"I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,
20 by loving the LORD your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them."

Gospel: Luke 9: 22-25
22 saying, " The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day."
23And He was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.
24"For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.   25"For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?

Friday after Ash Wednesday

Reading: Isaiah 58:1-9

Observances of Fasts
    1" Cry loudly, do not hold back;
         Raise your voice like a trumpet,
         And declare to My people their transgression
         And to the house of Jacob their sins.
    2"Yet they seek Me day by day and delight to know My ways,
         As a nation that has done righteousness
         And has not forsaken the ordinance of their God
         They ask Me for just decisions,
         They delight in the nearness of God.
    3'Why have we fasted and You do not see?
         Why have we humbled ourselves and You do not notice?'
         Behold, on the day of your fast you find your desire,
         And drive hard all your workers.
    4"Behold, you fast for contention and strife and to strike with a wicked fist
         You do not fast like you do today to make your voice heard on high.
    5"Is it a fast like this which I choose, a day for a man to humble himself?
         Is it for bowing one's head like a reed
         And for spreading out sackcloth and ashes as a bed?
         Will you call this a fast, even an acceptable day to the LORD?
    6"Is this not the fast which I choose,
         To loosen the bonds of wickedness,
         To undo the bands of the yoke,
         And to let the oppressed go free
         And break every yoke?
    7"Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry
         And bring the homeless poor into the house;
         When you see the naked, to cover him;
         And not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
    8"Then your light will break out like the dawn,
         And your recovery will speedily spring forth;
         And your righteousness will go before you;
         The glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.
    9"Then you will  call, and the LORD will answer;
         You will cry, and He will say, 'Here I am '
         If you remove the yoke from your midst,
         The pointing of the finger and speaking wickedness,

Gospel: Matthew 9:14-15

14Then the disciples of John came to Him, asking, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?"  15And Jesus said to them, "The attendants of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Saturday after Ash Wednesday

Reading: Isaiah 58: 9-14

A Confession of Wickedness
    9Therefore justice is far from us,
         And righteousness does not overtake us;
         We hope for light, but behold, darkness,
         For brightness, but we walk in gloom.
    10We grope along the wall like blind men,
         We grope like those who have no eyes;
         We stumble at midday as in the twilight,
         Among those who are vigorous we are like dead men.
    11All of us growl like bears,
         And moan sadly like doves;
         We hope for justice, but there is none,
         For salvation, but it is far from us.
    12For our transgressions are multiplied before You,
         And our sins testify against us;
         For our transgressions are with us,
         And we know our iniquities:
    13Transgressing and denying the LORD,
         And turning away from our God,
         Speaking oppression and revolt,
         Conceiving in and uttering from the heart lying words.
    14 Justice is turned back,
         And righteousness stands far away;
         For truth has stumbled in the street,
         And uprightness cannot enter.

Gospel reading: Luke 5:27-32

Call of Levi (Matthew)
27 After that He went out and noticed a tax collector named Levi sitting in the tax booth, and He said to him, "Follow Me."  28And he left everything behind, and got up and began to follow Him.  29And Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a great crowd of tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them.
30 The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling at His disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?"
31And Jesus answered and said to them, "It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick.  32"I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance."
