List of Readings
2nd Sunday of Lent
First Reading: Genesis 22:1-2, 9, 10-13, 15-18
1Now it came about after these things, that (A)God tested Abraham, and said to him, "(B)Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
2He said, "Take now (C)your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of (D)Moriah, and offer him there as a (E)burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you."
9Then they came to (H)the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built (I)the altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and (J)laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
10Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
11But (K)the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
12He said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now (L)I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld (M)your son, your only son, from Me."
13Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.
15Then the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven,
16and said, "(O)By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son,
17indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly (P)multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as (Q)the sand which is on the seashore; and (R)your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies.
18"(S)In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have (T)obeyed My voice."

Second Reading: Romans 8:31-34
31(A)What then shall we say to these things? (B)If God is for us, who is against us?
32He who (C)did not spare His own Son, but (D)delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?
33Who will bring a charge against (E)God's elect? (F)God is the one who justifies;
34who is the one who (G)condemns? Christ Jesus is He who (H)died, yes, rather who was [a](I)raised, who is (J)at the right hand of God, who also (K)intercedes for us.

Gospel: Mark 9:2-10
2(A)Six days later, Jesus took with Him (B)Peter and James and John, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them;
3and (C)His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them.
4Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus.
5Peter said to Jesus, "(D)Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; (E)let us make three tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
6For he did not know what to answer; for they became terrified.
7Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and (F)a voice came out of the cloud, "(G)This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!"
8All at once they looked around and saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone.
9(H)As they were coming down from the mountain, He (I)gave them orders not to relate to anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man rose from the dead.
10They seized upon that statement, discussing with one another what rising from the dead meant.

Monday

First Reading: Daniel 9:4-10
4I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed and said, "Alas, O Lord, the (A)great and awesome God, who (B)keeps His covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments,
5(C)we have sinned, committed iniquity, acted wickedly and (D)rebelled, even (E)turning aside from Your commandments and ordinances.
6"Moreover, we have not (F)listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, our princes, our fathers and all the people of the land.
7"(G)Righteousness belongs to You, O Lord, but to us (H)open shame, as it is this day--to the men of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those who are nearby and those who are far away in (I)all the countries to which You have driven them, because of their unfaithful deeds which they have committed against You.
8"Open shame belongs to us, O Lord, to our kings, our princes and our fathers, because we have sinned against You.
9"To the Lord our God belong (J)compassion and forgiveness, for we have (K)rebelled against Him;
10nor have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in His teachings which He (L)set before us through His servants the prophets.

Gospel: Luke 6:36-38
36"Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
37"(A)Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; (B)pardon, and you will be pardoned.
38"Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour (C)into your lap a (D)good measure--pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return."

Tuesday

First Reading: Isaiah 1:10, 16-20
10Hear (A)the word of the LORD,
         You rulers of (B)Sodom;
         Give ear to the instruction of our God,
         You people of Gomorrah.
16"(O)Wash yourselves, (P)make yourselves clean;
         (Q)Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight
         (R)Cease to do evil,
    17Learn to do good;
         (S)Seek justice,
         Reprove the ruthless,
         (T)Defend the orphan,
         Plead for the widow.
"Let Us Reason"
    18"Come now, and (U)let us reason together,"
         Says the LORD,
         "(V)Though your sins are as scarlet,
         They will be as white as snow;
         Though they are red like crimson,
         They will be like wool.
    19"(W)If you consent and obey,
         You will (X)eat the best of the land;
    20"But if you refuse and rebel,
         You will be (Y)devoured by the sword "
         Truly, (Z)the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

Gospel Matthew 23:1-12
1(A)Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples,
2saying: "(B)The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses;
3therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.
4"(C)They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.
5"But they do all their deeds (D)to be noticed by men; for they (E)broaden their [a]phylacteries and lengthen (F)the tassels of their garments.
6"They (G)love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called (H)Rabbi by men.
8"But (I)do not be called (J)Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers.
9"Do not call anyone on earth your father; for (K)One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
10"Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ.
11"(L)But the greatest among you shall be your servant.
12"(M)Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

Wednesday

First Reading: Jeremiah 18:18-20

18Then they said, "Come and let us (A)devise plans against Jeremiah Surely the (B)law is not going to be lost to the priest, nor (C)counsel to the sage, nor the divine (D)word to the prophet! Come on and let us (E)strike at him with our tongue, and let us (F)give no heed to any of his words."
    19Do give heed to me, O LORD,
         And listen to what my opponents are saying!
    20(G)Should good be repaid with evil?
         For they have (H)dug a pit for me
         Remember how I (I)stood before You
         To speak good on their behalf,
         So as to turn away Your wrath from them

Gospel: Matthew 20:17-28
17(A)As Jesus was about to go up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and on the way He said to them,
18"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man (B)will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death,
19and (C)will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and scourge and crucify Him, and on (D)the third day He will be raised up."
Preferment Asked
20(E)Then the mother of (F)the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, (G)bowing down and making a request of Him.
21And He said to her, "What do you wish?" She said to Him, "Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine (H)may sit one on Your right and one on Your left."
22But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (I)to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to Him, "We are able."
23He said to them, "(J)My cup you shall drink; but to sit on My right and on My left, this is not Mine to give, (K)but it is for those for whom it has been (L)prepared by My Father."
24And hearing this, the ten became indignant with the two brothers.
25(M)But Jesus called them to Himself and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.
26"It is not this way among you, (N)but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant,
27and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave;
28just as (O)the Son of Man (P)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

Thursday

First Reading: Jeremiah 17:5-10
5Thus says the LORD,
         "(M)Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind
         And makes (N)flesh his strength,
         And whose heart turns away from the LORD.
    6"For he will be like a (O)bush in the desert
         And will not see when prosperity comes,
         But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness,
         A (P)land of salt without inhabitant.
    7"(Q)Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD
         And whose (R)trust is the LORD.
    8"For he will be like a (S)tree planted by the water,
         That extends its roots by a stream
         And will not fear when the heat comes;
         But its leaves will be green,
         And it will not be anxious in a year of (T)drought
         Nor cease to yield fruit.
    9"The (U)heart is more (V)deceitful than all else
         And is desperately (W)sick;
         Who can understand it?
    10"I, the LORD, (X)search the heart,
         I test the mind,
         Even (Y)to give to each man according to his ways,
         According to the results of his deeds.

Gospel: Luke 16:19-31
19"Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day.
20"And a poor man named Lazarus (A)was laid at his gate, covered with sores,
21and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man's table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores.
22"Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to (B)Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.
23"In (C)Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom.
24"And he cried out and said, '(D)Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in (E)this flame.'
25"But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that (F)during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.

26'And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.'
27"And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father's house--
28for I have five brothers--in order that he may (G)warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'
29"But Abraham said, 'They have (H)Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.'
30"But he said, 'No, (I)father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!'
31"But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.'"

Friday

First Reading: Genesis 37:3-4, 12-13, 17-18
3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was (E)the son of his old age; and he made him a [a](F)varicolored tunic.
4His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers; and so they (G)hated him and could not speak to him [b]on friendly terms.
12Then his brothers went to pasture their father's flock in Shechem.
13Israel said to Joseph, "Are not your brothers pasturing the flock in (N)Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them." And he said to him, "I will go."
17Then the man said, "They have moved from here; for I heard them say, 'Let us go to (P)Dothan.'" So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.
The Plot against Joseph
18When they saw him from a distance and before he came close to them, they (Q)plotted against him to put him to death.

Gospel: Matthew 21:33-43, 45-46

33"Listen to another parable. (AD)There was a landowner who (AE)PLANTED A (AF)VINEYARD AND PUT A WALL AROUND IT AND DUG A WINE PRESS IN IT, AND BUILT A TOWER, and rented it out to vine-growers and (AG)went on a journey.
34"When the harvest time approached, he (AH)sent his slaves to the vine-growers to receive his produce.
35"The vine-growers took his slaves and beat one, and killed another, and stoned a third.
36"Again he (AI)sent another group of slaves larger than the first; and they did the same thing to them.
37"But afterward he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'
38"But when the vine-growers saw the son, they said among themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.'
39"They took him, and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
40"Therefore when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine-growers?"
41They said to Him, "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and (AJ)will rent out the vineyard to other vine-growers who will pay him the proceeds at the proper seasons."
42Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures,
         '(AK)THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED,
         THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone;
         THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD,
         AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES'?
43"Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people, producing the fruit of it.
45When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they understood that He was speaking about them.
46When they sought to seize Him, they (AM)feared the people, because they considered Him to be a (AN)prophet.

Saturday

First Reading: Micah 7:14-15, 18-20
14(AE)Shepherd Your people with Your (AF)scepter,
         The flock of Your possession
         Which dwells by itself in the woodland,
         In the midst of a fruitful field
         Let them feed in (AG)Bashan and Gilead
         (AH)As in the days of old.
    15"As in the days when you came out from the land of Egypt,
         I will show (AI)you miracles."
17They will (AL)lick the dust like a serpent,
         Like (AM)reptiles of the earth
         They will come (AN)trembling out of their fortresses;
         To the LORD our God they will come in (AO)dread
         And they will be afraid before You.
    18Who is a God like You, who (AP)pardons iniquity
         And passes over the rebellious act of the (AQ)remnant of His possession?
         He does not (AR)retain His anger forever,
         Because He (AS)delights in unchanging love.

Gospel: Luke 15:1-3, 11-32
1Now all the (A)tax collectors and the sinners were coming near Him to listen to Him.
2Both the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble, saying, "This man receives sinners and (B)eats with them."
3So He told them this parable, saying,
11And He said, "A man had two sons.
12"The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me (A)the share of the estate that falls to me ' So he divided his (B)wealth between them.
13"And not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey into a distant country, and there he squandered his estate with loose living.
14"Now when he had spent everything, a severe famine occurred in that country, and he began to be impoverished.
15"So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16"And he would have gladly filled his stomach with the pods that the swine were eating, and no one was giving anything to him.
17"But when he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger!
18'I will get up and go to my father, and will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight;
19I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired men."'
20"So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and (C)embraced him and kissed him.
21"And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'
22"But the father said to his slaves, 'Quickly bring out (D)the best robe and put it on him, and (E)put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet;
23and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate;
24for this son of mine was (F)dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.' And they began to celebrate.
25"Now his older son was in the field, and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing.
26"And he summoned one of the servants and began inquiring what these things could be.
27"And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and sound.'
28"But he became angry and was not willing to go in; and his father came out and began pleading with him.
29"But he answered and said to his father, 'Look! For so many years I have been serving you and I have never neglected a command of yours; and yet you have never given me a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends;
30but when this son of yours came, who has devoured your (G)wealth with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.'
31"And he said to him, 'Son, you have always been with me, and all that is mine is yours.
32'But we had to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was (H)dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.'"
