| ALL SAINT'S DAY NOV 1ST The festival in celebration of All Saint's is questionable. Halloween is the last day of October, and is named because of the EVE of ALL SAINTS.Commemeration of the death of matyrs begun to be celebrated in the 4th century. First celebrated in Antioch on the Sunday following Pentacost. For Catholics this is traced back to Pope Gregory III (713) for the "Holy of the world" ALL SOUL'S DAY NOV 2ND Click here MORE INFORMATION Feast of All Soul's (commemoration of the faithful departed) also called Defunct Day or the Day of the Dead. Is based on the doctrine that the souls of the faithful departed which at death have not been cleansed from venial sins, or have not attoned for past transgressions, cannot obtain Heaven. | First established in 1048 a pilgrim returning from the Holy Land was cast by a storm on the desolate island.A hermit living there told him that amd the rocks was a chasm communicating with Purgatory, from which perpetually rose the groans of tortured souls. Because no one prayed for them. When he returned home, he hastened to the Abbey of Cluny, and the monks set the date as Nov 2nd to pray for these souls. |
