PENTACOST
BACK TO OTHER SECTION of
OUR CATHOLIC FAITH
The 15th day after Easter Sunday which corresponds to the 10th day after Ascension.
Symbolicly related to the Jewish festival of Shavrot - it commerates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and Mary and the followers of Jesus.
Described in the Acts of the Apostles Pentacost is also called "Whitsunday" meaning wit or wisdom.
According to the bible the experience was shared by all in a large crowd causing confusion and inspiring fear. "When they heard this sound a crowd came together in bewilderment because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Then how is it that each of us hears them in our own language...amazed and perplexed they asked one another 'what does this mean?' ..Then the apostle Peter standing with the 11 apostles spoke to the crowd. He explained that these strange events had been predicted by the prophet Joel, and that Jesus' coming had been prophesied by David. Peter explained that these events confirmed David's prophesy exalation of Jesus. Peter then exhorted his listeners to turn to Christ. About 3000 responded to Peter's sermons."

SIGNS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
1- SOUND OF BLOWING WIND
a strong rushing wind was heard
    before the fire descended from
    Heaven.
2- TONGUES OF FIRE
    (a visible manisfestation of God)
This is important to us in that it
    represents the dynastic sucession
of power from the Jesus to the Holy
    Spirit who guides the believers.
3- GLOSSOLIA/XENOGLOSSIA
    (speaking in Tongues)
    The people heard the apostles
speak in their own language. It was
important in order to spread the
word of the gospel. The Holy Spirit
acts as the translator so ever
    person could hear the message.
